Egypt Air

Brief history
Egypt Air
was one of the pioneer airlines in the world and the most important in the
Middle East and the Arab countries. It was established in May 1932 in
association with Air work company under the name of Misr Air work . Its main
object .Its main objective was to promote the spirit of aviation and air
mindess among Egyptian youth .Using Gypsy Moth air planes, the company taught
the art and science of flight and aeronautical engineering. In August of 1933
Misr Air work commenced commercial operation with a Spartan Cruiser from Cairo
to Alexandria. By 1935 a total of 12 De Haviland were add to its fleet.
During
the Second World War, the Egyptian Government took over the airline and its name
was changed to Misr Airlines. In 1946 the name was changed to Misr
Airlines. In 1946 the name was changed again to Misr Air and 10 Beach
craft were purchased. These were the first American planes in the fleet . In
1949 Misr Air bought 10 Vickers Vikings and the following year put into service
the Languedoc. A French Aircraft.
After the revolution in 1952, the
Egyptian Government made considerable resources available to the airline thus
enabling it to upgrade its aircraft, equipment workshops and training facilities
to the standards of other international airlines. Misr Air became one of the
airlines to fly the turboprop Vickers Viscount in 1956. In 1958, it purchased
five McDonnell Douglas DC-3 Dakotas to serve domestic routes. Also in 1958,
during the political union between Egypt and Syria, Misr Air was amalgamated
with Syrian Airlines and became known as United Arab airlines UAA, and in fact
kept this name until October 1971, when it took its present name EGYPT AIR.
In 1960 UAA
introduced a fleet of Comet 4-C jets, enabling it to extend its network to more
capitals and large towns. Then in 1968, to cope with the ever growing
international traffic and to operate longer range routes, UAA introduced the
Boeing 707-320C. This new aircraft enabled UAA to fly to all parts of the Middle
East and major cities in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Far East. Egyp
Air was perceived to be the first airline in the world to
use the Turbo-prop aircraft, with the exception of British Airways, using the
Viscount. Also the first carrier in the Middle East to use jets, when it added
the Comet 4 C to its fleet in January 1961 In 1969, it also became the first
airline among those of the Middle East and Arab countries to fly the Boeing
707s.
